Couch, the band, invites everyone to get up and dance: Music on the Mesa hosts second free concert Aug. 11

The Norwood community has enjoyed two big dance events this summer with Wayne “The Train” Hancock and last weekend’s after-rodeo party with the Sean Deland Band; the third is just around the corner when Music on the Mesa hosts their second band of this summer, Couch, on Aug. 11.
It’s not unusual these days to hear about people collaborating via Zoom, but the band Couch began online jams before COVID shut down music venues. That long relationship has landed them in a place and time now where they are hitting stages across the country with their 40-city Sunshower 2 tour with rave reviews. What’s so special? They’re making people dance.
“It’s a family-friendly party; very danceable,” said Couch manager and guitarist Zach Blankstein, one of seven Couch band members who will take to the 44x32-foot stage in the field behind the Glockson Building in Norwood on Aug. 11.
“Couch is kicking it old-school with a delightful modern twist… [They] are single — or seven-handedly — breathing new life into the pop music scene,” said Sheesh Media on the band’s website, couchtheband.com.
When asked how they are breathing in that new life, Blankstein said, “We’re playing everything on a real instrument, live and in the moment.”
He said their music is layered and for all ages.
“It’s accessible for everyone, but also refined and exciting for people who pay attention to those things,” he said.
Blankstein said the band is excited to get back into the mountains.
“We couldn’t be more stoked to be in Norwood. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said.
This Couch tour is nearly over, with Norwood being one of the last stops. After a break, the band will tour with Cory Wong on his U.S. and Europe tours.
In Norwood, it’s possible the band will invite concert-goers to help them add to their Couch Family Photos, a virtual album the band curates from collections created by audiences.
Either way, Blankstein said, “Come and dance and have a good time.”
“This is a totally different vibe than we had in June, with Wayne ‘The Train’ Hancock,” said Rob Miller, owner of Pickin’ Productions and the one who chooses the bands, with input from Norwood-based Music on the Mesa organizer Daiva Chesonis.
“This is R and B pop, kind of like Lake Street Dive, and appealing to everyone,” Miller continued.
Chesonis is busy with all of the other organizing that goes with a free concert. She’s posting daily updates on the Music on the Mesa Facebook page and working hard to ensure the best possible experience for all.
Booths that were at the June concert will be returning with some new ones. Smoky Bear will be back and a kid zone is stocked with more fun games and items.
Food vendors again include Flying Bear Pizzeria and Polar Express Ice Cream Truck. Fenceline Cider returns as the beverage sponsor. The Norwood Youth Organization will team up with Friends Supporting Norwood Schools to bring a street tacos cart. And, a favorite at last weekend’s rodeo, 12-year old Lila Stidman will be selling smoked cookies and ice cream.
The Districts Lounge will feature the Library District, Norwood Fire Protection District, Norwood Park and Recreation and Uncompahgre Medical Center.
“Come talk to the folks that make Wright's Mesa a safe and engaging place to live and play,” Chesonis said.
Other vendors include Cypress Roots Craft Herbalism from Nucla, Henna Body Art by Dana Sexton, and leather goods plus clip-in hair and beard tinsel from Randy and Rochelle Crawford.
San Miguel Area Rapid Transit (SMART) SMART bus will make usual stops on a special concert route Sunday afternoon and evening from Telluride to Norwood and back, for free, during their “Zero fare for better air” campaign.
