Telluride’s history is written all over town—in its Victorian architecture, mining-era landmarks, narrow streets, and the stories of the people who carved out a life in this remote corner of the San Juan Mountains.
This fall, the Telluride Historical Museum is offering a fascinating way to explore that history with its Lone Tree Cemetery Tours, held on select Fridays from September through October.
The guided tours offer a closer look at how Telluride’s earliest residents lived—and died—during the town’s rugged mining years.
Lone Tree Cemetery sits at the east end of town and is the final resting place of miners, pioneers, families, immigrants, and other early residents who helped shape Telluride.
The Telluride Historical Museum’s guided cemetery tour brings some of those stories back to life, offering a glimpse into the hardships, personalities, tragedies, and resilience that defined life in a high-altitude mining community.
For anyone who loves local history—or simply wants to understand Telluride beyond the ski slopes and festivals—it’s a fascinating perspective on the town we know today.

There may be no better season for this particular glimpse into Telluride’s past.
By September and October, the pace of summer begins to ease, mornings become crisp, and the aspens surrounding town turn brilliant shades of gold. Lone Tree Cemetery itself sits beneath some of Telluride’s most dramatic mountain scenery, making the setting almost as memorable as the stories.
It’s also a reminder that what makes Telluride remarkable isn’t simply its setting. The community has layers—mining history, architecture, arts, outdoor culture, families who have been here for generations, and people who continue to find their way here today.
That sense of place is part of what continues to draw people to both the community and Telluride Real Estate.
For buyers exploring telluride homes for sale, learning the history of the town can add an entirely different dimension to understanding its neighborhoods.
East Telluride, downtown, historic residential streets, and the properties surrounding Colorado Avenue all developed within the context of the town’s mining history. Today, restored Victorian homes sit alongside contemporary residences, creating the architectural mix that makes Telluride so distinctive.
At Mountain Rose Realty, Anne-Britt Ostlund believes understanding telluride real estate goes well beyond square footage and property lines. It means knowing the neighborhoods, the community, and the history that gives this place its character.
